Hervé Million's journey from a frontline nurse in France to President of Medline EMEA offers a unique perspective on healthcare operations. We explore how his clinical understanding informs Medline's strategic approach to making healthcare run better, focusing on practical ways to support caregivers, enhance safety, and build resilient systems.

Your career began as a nurse in France. How has that direct experience at the bedside shaped your leadership approach at Medline and your vision for healthcare operations today?

My time as a nurse was foundational. It provided me with an unfiltered, real-time understanding of the daily pressures clinicians face – the constant race against the clock, the emotional toll, and the absolute necessity for reliable supplies and efficient processes. I vividly recall the unseen inefficiencies that accumulated, little things that stole precious minutes or added unnecessary stress. When I moved into the medical-devices sector, this perspective never left me. It instilled a deep, personal commitment to patient care and to empowering the incredible people who deliver it. At Medline, I constantly ask:

'How does this decision, this product, this service, truly impact a nurse on the floor, or a surgeon in the theatre?'

This ensures that our operational strategies aren't just about efficiency or profit, but about uncovering those hidden burdens and providing solutions, like our Sterile Procedure Trays (SPTs), that give caregivers the time and tools they need to focus on what matters most: their patients. It’s about building trust and ensuring we truly make healthcare run better from the ground up.

"A Patient-First Operations Playbook" suggests a direct link between operational excellence and clinical outcomes. Can you elaborate on how Medline translates this philosophy into tangible strategies that directly benefit frontline clinicians and ultimately patient care?

Our focus on customers is the driving force behind every operational decision. This means actively listening to healthcare providers – which goes back to our core value of 'Proximity to Clients' – and understanding their challenges. We have dedicated clinical teams comprised of former nurses and clinicians who regularly engage with hospitals, conduct deep-dive observations, and gather structured input, allowing us to translate frontline realities into our product development and service offerings.

Our strategies focus on streamlining their workflows and ensuring they have what they need, when they need it. A prime example of this is our Sterile Procedure Trays (SPTs). These are meticulously designed solutions that consolidate multiple items into one, pre-sterilised package. This reduces preparation time, minimises the risk of errors, and ensures consistency. It’s about leveraging our quality and manufacturing expertise to operationalise customer insight into product design. By providing comprehensive packs that are ready-to-use, we free up valuable time in the OR. This translates into smoother operations, more focused care, and ultimately, better patient outcomes.

In addition, In addition our support extends far beyond individual products to a comprehensive suite of integrated solutions. For instance, we also implement advanced technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) on SPTs for real-time traceability, automated inventory control, and seamless replenishment, further enhancing efficiency and reducing manual tasks. Our MedStock Inventory Management system is a handheld solution that automates key parts of inventory operations, from tracking and purchasing to cost centre allocation, significantly reducing administrative burden and ensuring clinicians always have access to necessary supplies. Our MedTrans dedicated logistics fleet provides specialised delivery options like Point-of-Use Service, Cart Service, and Rack Service, ensuring products arrive precisely where and when they are needed within the facility. Each of these diverse offerings is designed to streamline workflows, enhance efficiency, and ultimately, give healthcare professionals more time and peace of mind to focus on what matters most: their patients.

Staff shortages, which has multiple impacts including leading to potential clinician burnout, is a critical issue across Europe. What specific operational innovations or solutions does Medline champion to help give time back to these dedicated professionals?

Giving time back to clinicians is paramount, not just for efficiency, but for preserving the human element of care and combating burnout. Our Sterile Procedure Trays (SPTs) are a perfect illustration of this. We know from our research that SPTs can save surgical teams at least 10 minutes per procedure. Those 10 minutes translate into something vital for a stressed nurse or surgeon - the opportunity to take a much-needed break, grab a cup of tea, debrief, or simply have a moment of respite in an incredibly demanding environment – ultimately allowing for increased focus on patient care rather than operations.

Beyond SPTs, our tailored logistics services, like MedTrans and point-of-use stocking, ensure supplies arrive precisely where and when they are needed, eliminating time clinicians spend searching or managing inventory. Advanced technologies, such as RFID-enabled traceability, further reduce manual tasks. Each of these initiatives makes us a reliable partner of choice, ensuring consistent, dependable service that allows clinicians to breathe and focus on their patients.

Patient and staff safety are non-negotiable. How do Medline's operational decisions, from product development to supply chain management, contribute to a safer healthcare environment across EMEA?

Safety is woven into the very fabric of Medline, stemming from our commitment to compliance and quality. It begins with rigorous quality control in our manufacturing – our three ISO 13485-certified facilities and over 100 QARA professionals across Europe ensure every product, including the components of our Sterile Procedure Trays, meets the strictest requirements. SPTs, by their very nature, enhance safety by reducing the number of individual items handled, thus minimising contamination risks and potential errors during preparation, which directly benefits nurses in their daily routines.

We know that nurses depend on timely and predictable access to supplies. While external factors can create supply chain disruptions, Medline is committed to working closely with our healthcare partners to manage these challenges effectively. Our operational focus is on ensuring that the solutions we provide, like our optimised logistics and inventory management tools, help nurses maintain continuity of care and access critical products, even in difficult circumstances. This consistency is the foundation of the trust our customers place in us. We believe that a reliable flow of high-quality, compliant products, backed by transparent and supportive operations, directly supports infection prevention, reduces errors, and ultimately creates a safer environment for both nurses and patients. Our impact is durable because we continuously listen, anticipate needs, and execute with precision to support those on the frontline.

As someone who has walked in their shoes, what personal message would you like to share with current and future nurses working across European healthcare systems?

To every hospital nurse, both today and those who will join this noble profession tomorrow: Thank you. Your dedication, your resilience, and your unwavering compassion are the bedrock of our healthcare systems.

I’ve been there – I understand the immense pressure, the exhaustion, and the responsibility you carry every single day.
