Medline has released its annual sustainability report. The report outlines the company’s progress on key sustainability topics, as related to its supply chain and its work with healthcare providers (HCPs) and within communities where it operates.

‘We believe a truly resilient and responsible company is a sustainable one. That's why we've increasingly been integrating sustainability across our operations, from our supply chain and logistics, to how we empower our workforce and serve our communities,’ Hervé Million, President EMEA noted.

In 2024, Medline continued to advance its sustainability efforts, driven by an expansion of renewable energy use, cutting packaging waste, and increasing community involvement.

Oliver Watts, Sustainability Director, EMEA expanded on Million’s comment, stating, 'By taking this approach, we can help improve health, advance equity, and build a stronger healthcare system for the future. We are dedicated to being a partner that looks ahead, finds opportunities, and helps create meaningful change for people and the planet.’

Highlights of the report include:

  • Completed first global climate risk assessment – Medline identified key climate risks and opportunities guided by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and through the use of qualitative scenario analysis. This assessment provides a framework for consistent evaluation to help establish a formal decarbonisation strategy ahead. Going forward, Medline plans to conduct an annual climate risk assessment and will develop climate risk management procedures in alignment with its Enterprise Risk Management framework.
  • Completed double materiality assessment in Europe – Medline conducted a double materiality assessment (DMA) for its legal entity, Medline International B.V. (MIBV) in Europe, in preparation for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This was done to prepare for Medline’s first Sustainability Statement and was aligned with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The assessment evaluated the impact of MIBV’s operations on the environment and society, as well as the financial implications of sustainability-related risks and opportunities for the business.
  • Expanded Life Cycle Assessment Programme – Medline Europe expanded its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Programme to cover the entire surgical gloves portfolio, along with selected exam glove products. Building on the successful completion of LCAs for drapes and gowns in 2023, this expansion marks another significant step forward in advancing its regional sustainability strategy. These assessments have provided options for customers to select products from its portfolio with lower environmental impact for their intended use, aligning with shared sustainability goals. These assessments adhered to internationally recognised International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards and were independently verified by third parties, ensuring credibility and transparency.
  • Reinforced commitment to ethical sourcing – Medline has integrated its partnership with Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) across its supply chain. In this multi-year initiative, Medline encourages eligible Tier 1 suppliers in its supply chain to become WRAP-certified. Initially targeting suppliers of Medline-branded wearables, protective apparel and medical textiles, the WRAP project aims to strengthen and expand Medline’s social compliance programme by actively monitoring and promoting labour and human rights in its supply chain. By the end of 2024, approximately 30 of its suppliers were WRAP-certified.
  • Continued employee empowerment – Medline is committed to facilitating the continued education and development of its employees. In Europe, employees completed over 3,800 hours of learning, excluding in-person health and safety (HSE) training, as part of its ongoing investment in professional development. This is in addition to the availability of its Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which forms an important part of its efforts to empower employees while supporting their well-being. Medline is able to provide 24/7 support through its EAPs and employee support programmes.
  • Continued charitable activities – Giving back continues to be part of Medline’s work in communities where it operates. In Europe, Medline again ran its annual breast cancer awareness campaign, supported by its exam gloves division. In 2024, this initiative raised €10,000 in cash donations, with an additional €6,000 raised for the Movember Foundation.
